Discipleship

The active living of the individual Christian in accordance with the teachings of Jesus Christ, that is, being as effective a disciple of Christ as possible. Discipleship involves a ministry of outreaching love and witness to others concerning Christ and God's grace. Discipleship also calls the Christian to ministries of servanthood and service to the world to the glory of God and for human fulfillment.

Bible Study

Small group Bible study has been an important aspect of the Methodist Church since its inception. "The Holy Club" was John Wesley's covenant group. This group would meet regularly at Oxford and discuss a variety of things. The group became close-knit, and would help lift other members up in times of need.

At Burns Memorial, we aspire to do the same. Pastor John teaches a weekly Bible Study, offering the same class on Wednesdays at 10 AM and Thursdays at 5 PM. We meet in the Fellowship Sunday School Class room, at the end of the hall as you come through the office entrance.

We believe that study and connection to a community are important elements for spiritual growth. Small Groups are a wonderful way to connect with other adults on a regular basis for biblical study, fellowship, care and support on your faith journey.

Sunday School

Are you looking to learn more about the faith and to get to know some fellow church members?  Give the Fellowship Sunday School Class a chance!

The class meets at 9:30 AM Sunday mornings and use the "Uniform Series" curriculum from Cokesbury.   The class president is Mike Drake, the teacher is Bill Williams, and you would be more than welcome!

Fellowship Groups

Small Group ministry has its foundation in both the Bible and church history. Jesus and Paul did significant ministry in small groups. John Wesley developed a system of discipleship by gathering people together to share how they were doing in their walk with God.

Today in Burns Memorial we still hold to the belief that faith is best nurtured in a small group setting. Relationships built within a small group draws us closer to each other and nearer to God. Small Groups helps us create a more intimate and meaningful understanding of our faith.

Women’s Groups

The circles at Burns Memorial UMC are small groups of women who meet regularly for Christian fellowship, study, and mission projects. A Circle is a small community of women whose purpose is to know God, develop a creative supportive fellowship, and to participate in missions that represent the global ministries of the Methodist Church. We are blessed to have three active women's groups at Burns Memorial UMC.

  • The Carolyn Johnson Circle,  President  Mary Adams
  • The LaTane Kirkley Circle, President Shannon Hoover
  • The Women of the Flame, Facilitator Carol Echols

Methodist Men

The ministry of men in the local church is defined as a core group of men, partnering with their pastor, to invite and initiate spiritual growth opportunities for all men of the church.

All male members of Burns Memorial are automatically members of our Methodist Men’s (UMM) Group. We invite all Methodist Men to join us as we grow spiritually through fellowship and prayer. Opportunities for participation include discipleship in many areas. Our focus is NOT inward, but outward to all our community to assist and engage them in the process of both physical and spiritual growth

The Burns Memorial Methodist Men meet normally on the fourth Monday each month at 7 pm, in the Family Life Center. We conduct some business, have a short devotional, and enjoy a great dinner and time of fellowship!

We host many special events -- like the UMM Sweetheart Banquet!  We also have a special MM's Choir that sings during the Worship Service on fifth Sundays!

We invite you to connect with us as we keep our eye on the central reason for this ministry: to help others grow to a mature faith in God that moves them to action on behalf of others, especially “the least.” No matter where you are on your spiritual journey, God will meet you there.

Children's Ministry

Then he called a little child over to sit among the disciples, and said, “I assure you that if you don’t turn your lives around and become like this little child, you will definitely not enter the kingdom of heaven. Those who humble themselves like this little child will be the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me. Matthew 18:2-5 CEB

At Burns Methodist Church, we promise to surround our children with a community of love and forgiveness, that they may grow in their service to others. Our intention is to minister to the needs of all children and provide them with a caring community where all may be nurtured in a loving manner.

Nursery is provided for ages 4 and under during our worship service. Our priority is to love them in a safe environment and teaching them that Jesus loves them.
